Sunday giblets (redux)

Herro, tubelettes!  As is my custom on sporadic Sundays, I am here to say things that are not about books.

Firstly, Cara at Ooh...Books gave me the Honest Scrap award, which is sweet because that is how I like to think of this blog, as a giant pile of honest scrap.  I'm supposed to post 10 honest things about myself but I know I'm only going to be able to think of maybe 5, so I'm stealing Cara's idea and promising to answer honestly the first 5 questions in the comments.  *gulps*

Ok, 5 honest things:

1.  I haven't loved any new music since the late 90s, which means that for a decade now I've been talking nostalgically about music in my day.

2.  I think the reason most women and Canadian authors are so bad is that they're too caught up in being Women Authors or Canadian Authors that they lose track of the actual authoring part.  Also, both groups seem allergic to happy endings, even when a happy ending is probably what the story calls for.

3.  One time I bought a copy of A Fine Balance from Value Village right out from under my mother's nose, even though I know she really wanted it.

4.  Back when I waited tables, I would store my tip money in books on my shelf, and then when I needed rent or groceries I would go sift through the library.  Just before we got married, Joel came to help me move my stuff and was appalled by my loose cash so we bundled it up and took it to the bank, all $2800 of it.

5.  If I have to take notes by hand I will end up writing nothing down, both because I am lazy and because I have the handwriting of a 10-year-old boy.

Er.......that's it.  Have at.  I totally reserve the right to not answer if you are being inappropriate (I am looking at you, Chinese spambot) but I am not generally, how you say, reticent.

In other news, I writ about exploiting dead people for fun and profit at ye olde backofthebook.  The comments are, I think, still moderated over there, so have patience and whatnot.

Ok so!  Here we are.  Let's have at some more honesty.

6.  Chris wanted to know: What is your most favorite book and why should I read it?  And ok, there are two answers to this question.  MY favorite book ever is Jane Eyre, because it is everything that is awesome about lady authors and romance and Victorian literature and tortured heroes and mad relatives, and you should read it for all those reasons.  But my go-to book recommendation and what you (as in 'everyone') should read is The Princess Bride, because it is everything that is good about everything.  Romance, vengeance, torture, death, betrayal, pirates.  Q.E.D.

7.  Jenners wanted to know if those jeans made her butt look big, and the answer is 'no' but you should probably get a second opinion on those grey slacks.  Grey is the less-slimming black.  (I am totally joking.  I have no idea if Jenners has grey slacks, or any slacks at all.)

8.  Chandler asked if I would review his relative's book, and since that is a sneaky question and since he has already emailed me re: this before and I was too negligent to answer, then yes.

9.  Zoe asked: Are you always as happy and upbeat as you sound in your posts, or do you purposefully upbeat-ify them?  And yes, I am usually pretty damned happy.  Or pretty damned pissed off about something.  I'm not always this manic, maybe, but this blog is a fairly accurate representation of how I am in real life (expecially if you, dear reader, and I were ever to meet, in which case I would be this manic, because I am like a puppy around new people).

10.  Celine wanted to know whether I skewed towards dark or milk chocolate, and the answer is a hearty dark (this is where I throw in an obligatory 'like my soul' comment, but you can pretty much make those jokes for me yourself by this point).  Any sort of 'Special Dark' chocolate collection is my best day ever.\

Honest scrap out!  Back to my previously scheduled chronic lying!

  1. This is a lame-o question but inquiring minds want to know: What is your most favorite book and why should I read it?

  2. I'm thinking of taking up your hide my money in books saving plan. Wow.

And your blog is a wonderful big old pile of honest scrap. I love it for that reason.

And my question: Do these jeans make my butt look big? : )

  6. I used to do something similar (store money in books) and sometimes got a nice surprise when I opened one.

  9. I ALSO BOUGHT A COPY OF "A FINE BALANCE" FROM THE VALUE VILLAGE AND MOM DISCOVERED THAT MONTHS LATER AND STOOD AT MY BOOK SHELF GENTLY PETTING THE BOOK MUTTERING UNDER HER BREATH, "WHY CAN'T I FIND ANYTHING GOOD AT VALUE VILLAGE?"!!!!!!!!!!

This is also like that time we both bought American Literature or Modern Poetry or what-have-you from Value Village at separate times and then went back (separate times!) and re-found the book and wanted to buy it again only to remember we had both already purchased this book at least once!!!!

  10. You are totally preaching to the choir on Jane Eyre. I'm a fangirl of Jane Eyre. So I agree completely with that!

I must read The Princess Bride though.
