For those of you who are fully riding shot-gun with me on this and who get nervous every time a new one comes out because Gabaldon can't POSSIBLY retain that level of awesome through a seventh 700 p. + brick, DO NOT FEAR! Jamie has your back.
When we last left Jamie and Claire, they had been burnt out of the Big House and Roger and Brianna had gone
I refuse to sum up all 800 pages of Echo for you. Suffice it to say that Jamie and Claire are alternately chased and stabbed and shot at and threatened and forced asea with Jamie getting terribly and hilariously seasick and then them both being CAPTURED BY PIRATES *agog* and Dr. Claire sets bones and amputates limbs and performs a complicated abdominal surgery with ANESTHESIA even though it doesn't exist yet but she INVENTS it and Jamie somehow ends up in charge of a small army. Which is all very much business as usual.
Right, and Jamie and Claire (despite now being in their 50s [but both still very strapping, because Claire {being of the 20th century} understands things about nutrition]) doooo it, and they do it often, and it is hot. And anyone talking about these books is likely to mention this, and that might lead people to believe that Outlander is nothing but sexy times. But it's like when the cheese sauce for the broccoli is so good and you totally had a roast and some potatoes and this torte thing for dessert that had I think raspberries but SERIOUSLY, WHERE CAN I GET MORE OF THAT CHEESE SAUCE?
Also there is a Quakeress, and she is fiesty and I am amused. Who does not love the occasional Quakeress spit-fire?
And the writing is completely sans flaws. Some books are engrossing but the writing is dumb and we will not name names but we will look in the general direction of the Tudors and call it a day. Echo has all the ACTION and DRAMA and SCANDAL and then some seriously witty reparte. Also, Benedict Arnold shows up and says hi.
And, ok, maybe some people will say the plot drags, because there is no clear Thing We Are Trying To Solve. Me, I do not mind this. I would hang out with Jamie and Claire (and to a lesser extent, Brianna and Roger [and alright, Young Ian and William {who I totally forgot existed} and the Quakeress and even Lord John]) while they did their laundry and brewed gin. And then were ambushed by Indians, because that's how they roll. So the first 700 pages are ambly and good, and then in the last 100 some Shit Goes Down. I do not joke, your heart will be in your mouth and you will die of the anxiety and I kind of wish she'd squanched the first 700 pages into maybe 400 and then stretched the last 100 into three times that but then also I would not have died so hard.
But I cannot complain, unless it's about there being not enough Jamie, but not since the first book has there been anywhere near enough Jamie. That aside, it was everything I wanted and more.
9 caterpillars.
Also, I would like to formally make out with RandomHouse for sending this my way. ALSO, while trawling for cover images I discovered that you can WIN a copy from RH if you live in Canada. If there's a similar contest from the .com version, then I suck at finding things.

Um, can I be a nerd and say your 3 nested parantheses w/ different symbols were so much fun?! Pirates! Quakers! lol I think my mom will enjoy this one as much as she does the rest. :D (I stopped halfway through #5...I just couldn't take it anymore.)
ReplyDeleteI would bathe in this CHEESE SAUCE you speak of if it were socially exceptable.
ReplyDeleteWhy am I even waiting for my library copy?!!
Thank goodness for her hints at past storylines because I too forgot who William was and partway through page 1 I thought I was going to have to go back and re-read the first 6.
ReplyDelete800 pages is a heavy book to lift.
Well, I haven't yet jumped on the bandwagon (though I've had a couple of friends and one sister who have nagged me incessantly to do so) but your review might just have tipped the scales.
ReplyDeleteThanks, now I have to find time to read some huge bricks while still trying to make headway on my WIP.
Sweet, thanks for the contest link! Because after reading your review I need to get into this series asap.
ReplyDeleteMay I just say that I am a little bit frightened off from these books now by the actual rave reviews. And this is why: if I read the first 700+ page book and love it as much as everyone says I will, I will have to read the rest. Which means I'm not really looking at one 700+ page book but seven books with something like 5000 pages I'm going to have to read. Which is scary.
ReplyDeleteFirst, may I say that I would like to eat the cheese sauce off of Jamie? Jamie is THE DUDE! I am on the same bandwagon, but you are in the front seat, and I am way in the rear. I just finished The Fiery Cross (I might add that this now totals 193 audio discs) and have Breath of Snow and Ashes sitting here waiting to be uploaded. I had to laugh at your description of this book...pirates, sex, setting bones and abdominal surgery, tragedy, sex, seasickness, sex...that could have applied to any one of these books! Roger and Bri's love life doesn't do much for me, but Claire and Jamie? Hoo doggie. I hope by the time I am ready to "read" this one, it is out on audio.
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to have snagged a copy and I can't wait to read this one!!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking I'm going to have to jump on that bandwagon ... but it seems like such a commitment. Am I ready? I'll have to examine myself to find the answer. (This is said after being burned by the Wheel of Time series.)
ReplyDeleteI've been reading these books for a good 15+ years, and this is SERIOUSLY the best *and* funniest review ever.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm off to swoon over Jamie a little more. Yup - there I go!
I read the first book in the series, and I have Dragon Fly in Amber, and I read the first chapter or so before setting it aside for other books... but now I really want to get back to the series! Thankfully I'm doing the clean off your shelves challenge. Great review, per usual!
ReplyDeleteI got a little tired of this series after about book 4 -- the one with the Chinese acupuncturist, which I found totally contrived -- but I still loved your review. I loved your cheese sauce analogy. Maybe I'll give Claire and Jamie another chance.
ReplyDeleteI have had Outlander for at least ten years. I haven't read it yet, despite the love everyone has for it. This review really makes me want to dig it out, but as the other Lisa said, it's not just a 700 page commitment!
ReplyDeleteBest review of an "Outlander" book I have ever read! Embarrassed to admit I didn't even know there was a new one available. . .better dust off my "Breath of Snow and Ashes" while I await a copy.
ReplyDeleteI am only about 100 pages through this beast thus far, and already I am right there with you about Not Enough Jamie. (And correspondingly Too Much William.)
ReplyDeleteIn the middle of it now. Totally agree that there's Not Enough Jamie. In this one, there's even Not Enough Claire. Too much stuff with outside characters. I didn't read the Lord John books, cause who cares about him, but I'm feeling like I don't know what's going on cause I didn't read them.
ReplyDeleteStill, love Jamie, love Claire, love Diana Gabaldon! Sigh.
I entered the RandomHouse contest, only to find out it is not open to Quebec citizen!! Grrrrr!
ReplyDeleteAs a Die-Hard Bandwagon ridin' Outlander groupie I just had to get in there and say that I just finished An Echo in the Bone and LOVED IT! Probably more than any of the past three. I wasnt sold until about 100 pages in...the first bit was very...morbid...depressing...something like that.... you know? The last 100 pages! OMG!! Sooooh-eee! Rocked!!! I actually didnt mind reading more about William and Lord John, but then as a 27 YO woman I have to admit the idea of introducing a new, young, and rather large Jamie look-a-like wasnt such a shabby idea...and I'm looking forward to some Mohawk x Quaker lovin in the new future too... just imagine!
ReplyDeleteI just wrote a different kind of review of the series myself, check it out if you get a chance.

Can't wait to get to this one. Listening to the series this time around (on Drums). Trying to be careful and not stumble into any spoilers! Great review. Not sure if I can hold out now...
ReplyDeleteI really WANT to jump on this bandwagon, but I'm slightly intimidated by SO MANY books that are SO THICK. Some day when I'm caught up on review copies (ha!) I'll pick up the first one.
ReplyDeleteBandwagon? More like a ship or fleet of ships are needed for all the readers of this series.
ReplyDeleteI have just finished this book and was thrilled to see it had been published. I ordered my copy in advance, but because I live in Australia, I am behind the times.
OK, lovely book. That is an understatement. I gave just spent the last week reading this. It is a book I could put down, but one that I wanted to pick up again, after a short pause.
Unlike the rest of the readers, I am more enamoured with Claire and Brianna and their roles in the story. Jamie is manly, yes, but Claire and Brianna are intellectual and that is what appeals to me, despite them both being devoted wives and mothers.
There will be another book coming...that much is clear.
Three quarters of the way through and some crazy woman at a swim meet felt the need to approach me and complain about this wonderful book I'm reading. She basically told me the ending was the worst ever...but she doesn't like Lord John either - so I'm hoping she's wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'm slowing starting to appreciate William...but he's no Jamie - yet.
Loved the Borders interview with Diana - the worst part of it is we're going to wait another three years for another! But it is coming!!!
Love your review!
If there's anything better than reading about Jamie, it's listening to the audio version of the Outlander series. Davina Porter is a superb narrator. Don't even consider the abridged version! Give it a try!
ReplyDeleteWhen I discovered Outlander many many years ago I didn't know it was about to become an obsession - or a series. This was even before the internet was the way you found out about everything, so I had to wait until it was, and I thought one day about finding myself another good time travel book to read and Lo and Behold I stumbled upon Dragonfly in Amber! Day of days! I dove into Echo in the Bone and was pretty unapproachable around my house until close the end when I tossed it on the table in disgust at a ridiculous plot twist (won't say what - you all will know it when you see it). That lasted all of five minutes, when I grabbed it up and devoured the rest. So now the only thing to be done is wait for the next. In the meantime, I might start againg from the beginning, with Outlander. And I totally agree about Lord John, Brianna and Roger. Ho hum.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a fabulous, funny and spot on review.
The only bad thing about this book is I have to wait another three years to find out what happens next! I read the first book in 97 and I am still a big fan of her work. You know what Brianna is going to do though dont you - and I had to laugh with Jenny at the bottom of the stairs and all - awesome.
ReplyDeleteS.
Great review and comments from all, but I disagree with Brianna, Lord John, William etc being the boring bits. I can't wait to find out their stories now! I said goodbye to all the characters after the last book, which was a bit of a drudge for me, dragging on and on, and to my surprise they are all back again! Now I am back in their lives entirely only to realise I will have to wait years to find out what happens.....sigh
ReplyDeleteHave been reading all these in the series and the Lord John books for the past 15 years - and have gone back to some of them for a repeat read so I was delighted to receive 'Echo' for a Christmas present. I thought it was wonderful to meet all the characters again but I did get sick of the American war scenes. BUt my question is what has happened to Jem and to Roger?? What will Brianna do?? Will we have to wait for another book to find out or is there one about to be published??... I might even re read this one...
ReplyDeleteJenny
I am late to the party, as usual, but I just got the book last week and started it last night. I can tell you are as into this series as I am, and I thank you for this most-excellent summary and review. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, and I loved the multi-parenthetical thing, too. ;-)
Hi--I agree completely with Jenny--I can't imagine having to wait years to find out what happened to Jemmy and Roger! Most of the time, DG ends her books with some sort of resolution, but this was a cliffhanger. It was great, don't get me wrong. But I admit I went back and carefully looked at the last fifty pages to see if I didn't miss something with the Lallybroch contingent.
ReplyDeleteHave read them all in "quick"ish succession, but haven't laid my hands on the 7th yet. They were passed to me from my mother, and I have passed them to my daughter.
ReplyDeleteHad a bit of an argument at a booksale last year. One of the women in charge put the books in the Romance section. I objected, rather vociferously, but lost. She had read the first few pages of the first book, and it was just sex!! Couldn't believe my ears. So I snuck them into the historical fiction tray when I was on duty.
just finished "ECHO" and was shrieking 'cause I didn't find out what happened to Jem, Roger, Brianna et al... actually looked back hoping to find I'd missed something but to no avail!!!!!! Really disappointed.... hope a new book with the explanation comes before I'm too old to read!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't WAIT for the next book!
ReplyDeleteAgreed- the first few hundred pages totally dragged, but the last 100 or so made reading the entire thing completely worth it.
**SPOILER**
Favorite part was when Lord John and Jamie were in the barn and there was some discussion as to what happened when Jamie was gone, and then Lord John blurts out that he has carnal knowledge of Claire, and Jamie just goes like "Oh. Why?"
I totally love this series and re-read the whole series when I got the "Echo" as it had been so long since I read the first book. I was totally upset when I finished the "Echo" as it ended as a clif hanger and the author has never finished a book in that fashion. When I first started reading the series I read them out of order and they made sence and well as had an ending. I hope I am not dead before the next book comes out. I was disappointed with this book as it had too many other people and not enough of Jamie and Clair.
ReplyDeleteHi, just started Echo, and I foolishly leant my "Snow and Ashes" and have never been able to retrieve it.
ReplyDeleteCan someone tell me how Roger and Brianna have come by the "letters" from Jamie and Claire?
I would really appreciate if someone could help me out here.
Thanks.
Perfect analogy: Cheese sauce! More! Please! More! I didn't start reading these until last spring. I'm so glad I didn't know about them until then because I CANNOT imagine having to wait years to find out what happens next! I feel sorry for and impressed by all of your who have endured that. I'm now on *Echo*--in the middle, just having met the Amish vixen. To "Anonymous" of a few weeks ago, as far as I can gather, Claire and Jamie sent several copies of each letter several ways, but one batch (at least?) survived in a wooden box, which I believe they themselves carried back to Scotland (I don't know yet if this happens by end of *Echo*). I read as small a portion as I can bear each night so that I can savor this as much as possible. Nonetheless, I'm almost done with these thousands (tens of thousands?) of pages in rapid (for me) time. Is she going to keep on past the next? I love these people! Now, my only misgiving is that I don't think the Frasers have been compassionate enough toward Roger through all of his various traumas. Why the lack of sympathy for him?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know when the next book will come out? I just finished A Breath Of Snow And Ashes. I am going tomorrow to get Echo. I love these books. To love and be loved...every womans dream for a man like that.
