Edgar Sawtelle - David Wroblewski

I will not lie, I put myself on the library queue for this as soon as Oprah announced it as her new pick (I recognize that this was last year, but just when I got into the teens of the queue, I moved and had to start over). Partially this is because I am a sheep and want to read what everyone else is reading, partially this is because people who don't read a lot of books tend to at least read the ones Oprah whores out and I like to be able to talk to these people about the books that they've read, because it makes them feel like they do read a lot, and partially this is because Oprah has some good opinion-making-people. Middlesex. Fall on Your Knees. A Fine Balance. The Poisonwood Bible. These are all 9+ caterpillar books.*
.
Edgar Sawtelle is...how you say...long. I mean, it's really long. Not Pillars of the Earth long (which, for the record, is worth every penny), but long AND slow AND meandering. And the good kind of all those things, and I loved the ride (did I mention all the dog-training, and all the squeeing? Not yet? Ok.), but a long book is a serious investment, and I usually find myself apprehensive as we approach the end. WILL IT HAVE BEEN WORTH IT!?!?!?
.
The plotsum in short form is as follows: mute baby, puppies (squeee!), dog-training (double-squee!), tragic death (not telling whose!!), adventure and deception, ending about which I am uncertain how to feel, but am leaning towards 'ripped off.' The intarsphere is spattered with other plot summaries, and this is proof that I don't do any of my 'research' until halfway through a review because my favorite 'pedia has just informed me that ES is a retelling of Hamlet and now everything makes sense and I renege on my earlier comments. Edgar Sawtelle is awesome. Please don't tell Dr Kuchar what a shitty English student I am.
.
Well, if I'd known that it was Hamlet then it would have made more sense, but then I also would have known how it was going to end. So maybe I shouldn't have told you.
.
And since this is starting to sound like the ravings of a crazy person (Opheliaaaaaaaaa!), I may as well admit that I watched Greatest American Dog because I find dog-training FASCinating, and I feel like that may have contributed to how much I enjoyed the first nine-tenths of this book (before it jumped the shark. But not really, apparently). So...I think it was really good? Now I'm confused.
.
Uhhhhhhh, eight caterpillars.
.
*I am studiously ignoring the presence of Million Little Pieces on the illustrious list.

  1. Have never heard about this book or this author. Or maybe I have, but then it will have been on another blog.

Of course I know Oprah (and even read some of "her" books - I loved Fall on Your Knees and Poisonwood Bible) and I also know Hamlet ;-)

But judging from what you wrote, this is a good book, even though it is long.

hehehehehehe oh Raych such concern for the feelings of others! Whereas when one of my good friends tells me Angels and Demons is the best book he's ever read. Seriously. (he added that to the end-that's not me) I just look at him with heartbreak in my eyes.

Have you read Anna Karenina yet?! In the awesome Pevear and Volokhonsky translation that has the Oprah stamp of approval? Cuz you should.

  3. I did not have this on my TBR list. Until now. Does it have to be so long, though? I'm not looking forward to working my way through a long meandering book, even if it's all the good stuff that goes with long and meandering ...

  4. This is what I keep hearing about ES! Long. I have a friend who is impressed, but she's just started. Another friend, it took her so long to read, she sort of forgot what she was supposed to remember in the first half and felt she had failed somehow. I don't think that is a positive sign, unless you don't believe entertainment is an important factor in reading. Because, I've read 1000 page books that fly by. IDK, I'm not reading it. I doubt it's better than Hamlet. Remember 1000 acres, the rewrite of King Lear? I hated that one. OMG! I sound so crabbins!

  5. I bought this one a lonnnnng time ago and it sits on my shelf, begging me to read it.

I don't like to read books that are getting a lot of hype until they have fallen off the radar. However, I BUY them right away. Which makes no sense.

BTW..I knew about the Hamlet thing. How could you not?

  6. How long are we talking? I'm glad I know it's based on Hamlet, because if I didn't, I'd probably never figure it out by myself and have a nagging feeling I knew this story form somewhere and it would drive me nuts. And I love reading about dog training, too. Even though I don't have a dog.

  7. I really enjoyed this book. It kind of bothers me that Oprah whores all these books out and has to put her name on them...but I do usually like the ones she picks. I did start reading this one before it was announced as an Oprah book though!
